Luke 24 v 21 "We had thought he was the Messiah"

When Cleophas and his friend encounted the risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus it was at a time for them of doubt and despair. They, like the other followers of Christ, had seen their hopes and dreams dashed, the one that they had pinned their hopes on, the one that their had believed would make a difference was no more! 'we had thought he was the one, but!' they were so lost in their disappointment and grief they failed to recognise that the one walking with them was the very one that they now doubted.

There will be times in all our lives when we will walk our own Emmaus road, our own road of doubt and despair, it may be in times of sickness, times of trial, times of depression or times of mourning, times when we will say 'I thought he was the one, but--' whatever the reason we will at some point make that journey. We do not make it alone! just as Jesus walked with those two, so he walks with us. If, like them, we fail to see him, fail to recognise him, it doesn't make it any less of a reality that he is there! When we go through those times may God grant us the grace and the faith to realise that Christ walks with us and at times carries us.
